On 2 June, the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum launched its thematic policy paper “Environmental security in the EaP countries: state of play, challenges and opportunities”.

Key points of the discussion:

  • Achieving environmental and climate resilience remains a challenge for all countries in the Eastern Partnership region, a situation further exacerbated by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine;
  • Civil society is an essential force in driving reforms, contributing to environmental security and supporting green transition across Eastern Partnership countries.

  • Mr Matthew Griffiths, Senior Programme Manager, Green Growth and Global Relations Division, Environment Directorate, Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development 

Nataliya Andrusevych, EaP Coordinator of Working Group 3 and Chair of the Governing Board of Resource and Analysis Center “Society and Environment”, discussed the main environmental security challenges in the Eastern Partnership region, stressed the climate and security nexus, provided insights on current EU projects and avenues for engagement of civil society, and emphasised the role of civil society in advancing national reforms against climate change and energy threats.

Ruslan Havryliuk Facilitator of the Ukrainian National Platform at the EaP CSF and Head of National Ecological Centre of Ukraine, delivered the concluding remarks, highlighting that regional stability is closely tied to environmental security, especially amid Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
