The Ukrainian national platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum held the online discussion “Gender aspects of Ukrainian public diplomacy: a view from different sides of the border” from the NGO “Women’s Consortium of Ukraine”.

Working languages are Ukrainian and English with simultaneous translation in Zoom for all those who have previously registered.

The goal: to identify opportunities for strengthening the lobbying of the Ukrainian issue at the EU level with the participation of the so-called “people’s diplomacy” – organized and unorganized initiatives of youth and women, to provide examples of such initiatives, to suggest possible promising formats of people’s diplomacy.

Taking into account the prospects of Ukraine’s European integration and taking into account the fact that a significant share of Ukrainian youth, avoiding the risks of war, moved to the EU, it is in the interests of Ukraine to use this fact as a presentation of Ukraine to the EU, a constant reminder of the need to support Ukraine, present its own needs and opportunities for the European community. And the leadership capabilities of young women, who are more numerous among those who have entered the EU countries, can be a precious resource in public diplomacy. The current situation demonstrates very different examples of the presentation of our country by Ukrainian women and Ukrainians in the EU. At the same time, the lack of effective initiatives of Ukrainian men and women abroad to lobby the Ukrainian issue is a factor that is subject to influence. Therefore, there is an urgent need to determine the existing potential of promoting the Ukrainian issue by means of public diplomacy and to promote the purposeful development of this resource.

The speakers of the online discussion presented their own experiences and offer solutions that, in their opinion, will contribute to the strengthening and effectiveness of public diplomacy by Ukrainian youth and women at the EU level.

Among the speakers:

🔸 Marcos Nogueira, president of the Portugal/Europe initiative in support of Ukraine

🔸 Maria Kurinna, expert in international advocacy and gender expert, former diplomat, graduate of the Chevening scholarship program of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Britain and master of law school/human rights center of the University of Essex.
